Status and perspectives of experimental satellite quantum communication.

Satellite quantum communication (QC) is a necessary requirement for the verification of quantum theory predictions in an unexplored scenario and for the extension of quantum cryptography to a global scale. The Padua University, in collaboration with the Matera Laser Ranging Observatory, recently realized the first qubit transmission from a satellite. Moreover, a single photon transmission link from a medium Earth orbit satellite has been demonstrated as well, fostering the expansion of QC with geostationary satellites. The presentation will give an overview of these recent results, highlighting challenges and perspective for the realization of orbiting quantum transmitters onboard small satellites.
