Advances in optical coatings for gravitational wave detectors.

The noise floor level of interferometric detectors of gravitational waves is the lowest in the mid-frequency band between a few tens and a few hundreds of Hz, where it is presently set by the highly reflective coating of the end-mirrors (freely falling test-masses) of the instrument's optical-cavity arms. In this communication we review the state of the art of optical coating research for gravitational wave detectors, the ideas that led to the design of the advanced-LIGO mirrors (including the Authors' own contributions), and the possible future options for further noise reduction, presently under investigation.
