Studies on optical scattering from gravitational wave detector mirrors.

Light scattering from the highly reflective coatings of gravitational wave detectors test masses are responsible for a large fraction of the stored-beam light losses, and ultimately affect the sensitivity and range of the detectors. Spatial and amplitude distribution studies of these scatterers on LIGO mirrors are reviewed, based on measurements made $in situ$ and on witness-samples, in an effort to identify common features of the scattering points, understanding the physics behind their formation, and finding strategies to reduce their effect.
