The rapid development of laser technology is opening the possibility of employing laser-plasma interaction as a unique tool for testing fundamental physics. It will be shown that, already at the classical level, the long-standing problem of radiation reaction can be investigated with available laser beams interacting with solid targets. At a more fundamental quantum level, the validity of quantum electrodynamics (QED) at unprecedented field strengths effectively of the order of the Schwinger field can be probed by testing the predictions of QED on vacuum-polarization effects and on the generation of "an exotic fifth state of matter", the electron- positron(-photon) plasma.
