An experimental study of a coupled oscillator chain.

Coupled pendula show complex and unpredictable collective motions, often chaotic or solitonic-like, and represent a physical model for quite different systems and phenomena. By means of an automated optical videotracking apparatus we have monitored the motions of 24 non-linearly coupled pendula on varying the initial conditions (excited oscillators energy, anharmonicity, etc.). At long times we have found the expected approach to ergodicity with thermalization and synchronization of the chain, according to the second law of thermodynamics and to the quipartition theorem. We have also observed some "intrinsic localized modes" of the oscillators (as discrete breathers or domain walls).
