Double-Beta decay: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow.

After a brief hystorical and experimental introduction, the present status and challenge of second-generation experiments to search for double-beta decay especially in its neutrinoless channel will be reported. The expected results on neutrino mass will be compared with the new theoretical predictions, which suffer unfortunately, expecially at present, from the uncertaintly on the relevant value of the nuclear matrix elements. Despite these difficulties which make this process only an indirect way to evaluate the neutrino mass, neutrinoless double-beta decay remains practically the only way to investigate its properties, namely if neutrino is or is not its own artiparticle as hypotized by Ettore Majorana in his genial theory. Mention will be also given to the exiting and inespected interdisciplinary consequences that this theory could have in solid state physics.
