Generation of gigagauss magnetic fields in laser plasma via the radiation reaction effect.

At intensities foreseeable with next generation of petawatt-lasers, the influence of the radiation friction (RF) force on the dynamics of laser-driven plasmas is expected to be considerable. For circularly polarized pulses interacting with thick opaque plasma the effective dissipation provided by the RF force allows the absorption of electromagnetic angular momentum leading to the generation of multi-Gigagauss axial magnetic fields. These fields could last much longer than the laser pulse duration. Detected via optical polarimetry techniques they may provide an unambiguous signature of collective RF effects. Such Inverse Faraday Effect driven by RF is investigated in three-dimensional simulations.
