Towards a velocity space tomography of MeV ions in fusion plasmas with multiple nuclear detectors.

The minority population of MeV ions in magnetically confined plasmas plays a key role in sustaining the fusion burn. However, its velocity space remains elusive and can only be incompletely diagnosed. By accounting for the velocity space sensitivity of each individual instrument, tomographic methods can be adopted to completely infer the energetic ion velocity space. We will illustrate the concept by determining the velocity space response of 100 keV beam ions to a sawtooth crash. Taking advantage of recent advances in nuclear detectors, we speculate that a similar reconstruction for MeV ions is within reach in the short term.
