Visible laser operation in Pr-doped fluoride crystals grown by the micro-pulling-down method.

We report on the growth and laser operation of praseodymium-doped fiber-shaped single crystals of LiYF$_4$, LiLuF$_4$, and $KY_{3}F_{10}$, grown by the micro-pulling-down method. This technique directly produces crystal rods with a diameter as low as 500 $\mu$m, suitable to build miniaturized or integrated laser devices. We checked the optical quality of the crystals by measuring their spectroscopic features, in comparison with Czochralski grown samples, and by observing the profile of a laser beam transmitted through them. Using an InGaN laser diode as pump source, we achieved continuous-wave laser emissions in the orange, red, and deep red regions.
